Leadership Coaching with Dr. Diane

What is resilience? Why does it matter?

There are certainly a lot of people talking about resilience these days, and that makes sense: as the world changes more and more quickly, we are reeling with overwhelm. We have barely recovered from the last major change when the next one rolls in.

Here’s our take on resilience: the ability to bounce back from challenges and stressors, and to even grow from the experience. As change accelerates, our ideas about resilience also naturally evolve.

20 Minute Discovery Call with Dr. Diane

Diane Biray Gregorio, Ph.D.

What will happen? What are some things you can reflect on to make the most of this call?

  • The call is a chance for us to connect, one-on-one, and begin to get to know each other.
  • You can ask me anything.
  • I’d love to know a little bit about you. Since it’s a short call, here’s a question that might help spark our conversation:

What could you imagine doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?

What is coaching? Is it like therapy?

Coaching is when an individual who is motivated to grow, whether at work or at home, works together with a professional who is trained to support your learning and development, using methods backed by science and personal experience.

In coaching, you will:

  • Develop self-awareness
  • Discover areas for growth
  • Create specific goals
  • Practice skills and behaviors to move toward those goals
  • Receive support and accountability for your progress

Sure, in order to get to where you already are, you’ve figured a lot out on your own. But coaching allows you to level up faster and break through places where you’ve been stuck. Professional athletes and performing artists at the top of their game rely on coaches as key members of their teams.

The work of self-awareness depends a lot on your active engagement, of course. That said, research clearly shows that coaching accelerates your potential in multiple areas.

With a coach in your corner, you will have the support you need to rise to the next level of your life’s purpose and meaning.

How is coaching different from therapy?

The difference between coaching and therapy is the difference between metabolizing the present and future versus making sense of the past.

Therapy focuses on understanding and healing the impact of past events. While it can be an important support for some, it isn’t coaching.

Coaching is about empowering what you’re doing right now, in terms of what you want to create for the future.

How does coaching help you build resilience?

There is a lot out there on how to build resilience. In my experience working with countless clients, though, the challenge is not understanding the skills and approaches intellectually, but in developing the muscle memory so you can embody resilience in the heat of the moment.

What I have seen time and time again is that when the sh*t hits the fan, and our emotions are charged, our brain is in fight / flight / freeze mode. In that state, it’s very difficult to remember new information, even when it’s useful. If you try to put a skill into practice when it’s not yet a deeply ingrained habit, you’ll likely find it’s nearly impossible.

Just as in the performing arts or sports, we have to practice our skills again and again in real life situations (hopefully, in less charged situations than a concert or a big game), before our muscle memory kicks in and we automatically apply the skill when we need them most. When you practice emotional resilience methods with a coach, you’re supported in adapting those methods to how your brain works, and to your own life situations. That support can mean the difference between years of practice, or weeks.
